Thank you, for this insightful, but depressing look a our immediate future. If we don't stop this surge of criminality we will end up January 20, 2025 with our democracy handed to us in a bowl of pig slop. I realize most of you have no memories of Europe under fascism; but at 91, I do, and I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Thank you Fay. Your stories are incredibly important. I fear we easily lose generational awareness without people weighing in on hard-fought societal victories toward democracy, justice, and equality.

You are very kind, George. I find i hard to believe that ordinary people, like the Trump cultists could actually embrace fascism. Maybe they think all those reports about WW2 are just movie shows. There are some of us - Dan Rather, who is a couple of years older than me, too young to serve, but old enough to have accurate memories.

I know. And deeply troubling that more people voted for him in 2020 than did in 2016. We really need to radically change our approach to elections and helping more people understand how the political structure and economics impacts the quality of all our lives. I’m continuing to work on it and have been for many years.

George: Great piece. I do think that there are millions more who think as you (and I) do & will vote accordingly. however, there are also millions who buy this crap and have no problem or shame in supporting this irrationality. We really need to address that cancer as to how it came to be and how it can be eradicated.

Hi George and thanks for this great post. I enjoyed the read and you have summed up the problems with Trumpers, MAGA, and other Republicans - those elected or not. I live in a rural, mountainous area of Arizona and am singled out as one of the few Dems in a sea of Trump supporters.

How did we as a nation get here? This was not just a Trump dream to be the President, but rather a man who visited Russia once too many times and was enamored by Russian graciousness, beautiful women, and Russian financial support. He was entrapped without knowing what hit him. For example, every hotel room in Moscow assigned to a foreigner has cameras and listening devices in the walls and ceiling. It also has breath-taking beautiful Russian KGB-employed women knocking on the door all night offering services. In addition, Trump declared bankruptcy six times. U.S. banks refused to bail him out, so he turned to Russian banks - which are all controlled by the KGB/FSB. They don't care about the interest-earned on a loan, but are ordered to loan money to foreigners to either launder black cash into another countries economy, OR to entrap a foreigner to work for Russia. Both Trump older sons have bragged about the Trump Organization receiving $100 million dollars from Russian banks. (www.businessinsider.com) Trump was trapped and on the KGB payroll about ten years prior to sleeping in the White House.

Putin is a master spy who spent the majority of his secret service years in East Germany. There he learned Hitler's secrets to mass mind manipulation. Hitler converted an entire peaceful nation into mass murderers and over six million humans were butchered and murdered. This is known as brainwashing, and it went from Germany to Russia with Putin and lo and behold it is now widespread and found in the United States via Trump. There is little information in the U.S. about this process, because his lies full of hatred are all attributed to a difference in political parties rather than the truth. This cult-like Republican rhetoric spread like wild-fire and absorbed the brain cells of most Republicans. It is a mirror reflection of the same brainwashing that is used worldwide in other dictator-led countries - a long list. The problem in the United States is that we are an isolated nation - our borders are two oceans and two countries. We are disconnected from our NATO friendly nations abroad, and have a limited understanding of what caused World War I or II.

Brainwashing is defined (Wikipedia) as telling lies over and over until they are perceived as the truth. Sound familiar? If the lie contains hatred, which is used constantly by Trump, the human brain releases a hormone to enact violence. Once a person is convinced, there is little to NO independent thought. I often think of those individuals who attempted to destroy our Congress and stop the legal election results in order to put Trump back in the White House. Their brains were filled with hatred, savagery, and ferocity. In fact, if Nancy Pelosi did not act decisively and quickly to reconvene the Congress on January 6, 2021 and controlled the election certification process, Judge Alito was prepared to issue an injunction to STOP the legal process. Sidney Powell, a convicted attorney who supported the illegal transition of the 2020 election, announced that she and Alito discussed his role to stop the legal election. This is the same Supreme Judge who flew the American flag upside down at his house in a show of support for the insurrection.

Examples of brainwashing are the cult figures like Jim Jones who amassed a following of 900 individuals. He thought he was God - just like Trump - and was indomitable. He ordered them all to drink Kool Aid laced with poison and they all died. Charles Mason convinced his small group to commit murder. China and Russia uses cult-like slogans and controlled broadcasting to sway minds. In the U.S. we have FOX news admitting to supporting Donald Trump and viewers believed their disinformation and propaganda. Within a year of Putin assuming the Russian Presidency, about 85 independent reporters were murdered in gang-like executions. One such reporter was shot right outside of my Moscow apartment building - her blood staining the dirty Moscow snow-covered sidewalks.

I was at a book signing event at a Barnes and Noble in Tucson, Arizona. A woman came up to me and said "I believe Putin is a great leader." I was so shocked that I opened my mouth, but could not quickly respond. These were the exact same words announced by Trump the previous week and right after Russian troops attacked the sovereign nation of Ukraine. THIS IS BRAINWASHING and it has swept across our nation faster than COVID-19.

So while the brave twelve jurors listened to five weeks of evidence and then independently pronounced Trump guilty on all 34 felony counts, our nation's fight to save our democracy is far from over. The evidence was in black and white - it was proof. None of the Congressional Republicans who have spoken out against this trial (and our system of justice) have listened to the evidence and viewed the proof. Trump had his day in Court, just like any other citizen. The day afterward - Friday - Trump is giving speeches filled with anger, lies, and violence and he wants our entire country to prostrate and believe his hypocrisy. Only those who see through his falsity and deceitfulness will be around to witness his final hours. Those Americans who are willing to "kiss the ring" will either finally be silent or in prison with him.

I spent about twenty (20) years living and working in six dictator-led countries. I then returned to live and retired in the United States, and to write. From Democracy to Democrazy (by Graham) was published in July 2023 and quickly became a bestseller on Amazon. While it talks about racism, police brutality, and American wars, it's main topic is a comparison of how the U.S. government - when led by Trump - was a mirror image of how Putin - a dictator, and Russian government operates.

Thank you for a well-detailed post Elizabeth. There is no question that the distribution of propaganda, lies, and disinformation, whether State-sponsored via Putin (as was evidenced in The Mueller Report), or via distribution through Fox, OAN, or RT drives confirmation bias, deepening already entrenched divides among Americans. It is a divide and conquer strategy and the objectives of Putin and the extreme wealth in the United States is well-aligned.

Yes all of this is disheartening and you have every right to feel the way you do. But I believe that all of the things in your piece are going to bring about change so these things never happen again. I am very optimistic and I was right when I wrote he’s going down! I felt in my gut he’d be found guilty and I also feel he will lose in an avalanche of votes for Biden! SCOTUS will be reformed, the GOP will die with all these old men, congress will evolve into a bipartisanship. This is my vision. Hallelujah.

Thank you -and yes, while disheartening -also continuing our efforts to organize. When considering all of the factors, it really is organized people versus concentrated wealth. We must think of new and better ways to work together and not allow ourselves to be so readily divided.

The media? I tried to form a one-person search party by writing Rachel Maddow Show:

Message for R. Maddow show:

I became aware of Project 2025 at the end of last year. However, I have not seen any MSNBC news segment conduct a comprehensive analysis of this project. I am a regular viewer of MSNBC segments and, in the course of discussion of other topics, I am just now hearing commentators occasionally reference it. But only in passing, as if everyone is already conversant with it and its importance. I don't believe most people are -- even progressives.

As the election draws near, we can expect Biden to distinguish himself from Trump by referencing 'democracy.' BUT as a former educator, I truly believe the American electorate is, at this point, so uneducated that I doubt they will even understand what democracy is and the importance of its lynchpins. I don't believe that the average citizen could explain the difference between a democracy and an authoritarian system -- and Trump's role in that.

Here's why I'm writing: I would love to see Maddow host a panel of commentators explaining the major elements of Project 2025 and why it's so critical for voters to understand them. Not just a 10 min. performance, but giving this subject the importance it deserves. Perhaps a special all its own.

I am a regular reader of Substack writers/commentators who mention P2025 quite frequently. These are educated, aware citizens. I think MSNBC viewers need to be given the same opportunity to understand this important aspect of Trumpism. I can't think of a better network nor host to do this than MSNBC with Rachel in the lead.

As of yet, no response. Are we surprised?

Thank you Jacquelyn. I've been hearing a rising tide of complaints about MSNBC, so I'm saddened but not surprised.

Interestingly -one of my cousins is an attorney and works (or worked) in a law practice with Rachel Maddow's father. For quite a while I was hoping to gain more visibility into the work I've been driving for https://civ.works.

Sadly, same rules applied. No response.

I did manage to review the 900+ pages of the toxic dystopian architecture articulated in Heritage's Project 2025. You might have seen it? (Although to your point, not on MSNBC)

George, thanks for taking time out of your 'busy-ness' to respond to me and all the others. Regarding your hearing 'a rising tide of complaints about MSNBC,' I did another fruitless run at MSNBC regarding Morning in America Joe (no typo). Noticing that the entire team is increasingly moving toward a news-tainment format and sports commentary slipped in between news comments, I thought I try another run at a 'posse'. No luck. Disheartening, since in the MSM ecosphere, MSNBC is really all we have. We're lucky to have Substack.

Friendly reminder that a Grand Jury also weighed in, so please give credit to there being many more informed (by evidence) people that determined crimes had been committed, before the motions and delays by the defendant resulted in a trial in an election year. I do hope that since indictments for other crimes related to election interference are pending, that no leniency for first offense is given. He's a repeat offender, ‘16 and ‘20, he doesn't deserve a chance to interfere in ‘24 but we know he'll try.

Great article George. Great parade of 'bad actors'. I agree at least 99%. The only suggestion I have is maybe remove the photo of the newspaper headline and replace it with one that is clearly printed in the US. It was easy for me to zoom in and see the letters UK. I think it detracts a little from a lot of the truths you said about the media.

From my perspective -it really is a global media concern. The U.S. papers are all projecting it as a "Hush Money" case -so not surprising it is picked up as such in the U.K. and elsewhere.

There are many high ranking politicians and ex Prime Ministers in the UK who are openly pro Trump and MAGA and Heritage Foundation. The UK media is often just as guilty as the US media of minimising Trump’s depraved criminality. Do not mistake British anti American opinion for anti MAGA political allegiance.

Indeed. Boris Johnson is also on record as having claimed that the world was safer under the Trump presidency. As for our local Northern Ireland MAGA supporters, the Democratic Unionist Party, they have overseen horrendous ecological damage during their long years running the place in a blatantly corrupt manner, uncontested. Gifted criminal immunity for ‘national security’ reasons by consecutive British government. They allow rogue farmers to so illegally pollute Europe’s largest freshwater lake, Lough Neagh, that it has now been officially declared as dead.

I' haven't heard of anyone being provided addresses, maybe because threatening a juror or any member of a court proceeding is a felony.
