I am afraid you are right. As a lifelong transatlanticist and retired German diplomat with three assignments in the US it pains me to say that. When President Biden travelled to Europe after his election he announced that 'America is back.' While we certainly welcomed that our response was somewhat subdued as many asked 'will they stay?'
We have the answer. And the world will never forget that the US electorate, undoubtedly helped by a deeply flawed electoral system (no, the US democracy is not 'the shining city on the hill' in this respect), has unleashed a monster on the nation as well as on the world.
Bravo! Hooray! Kudos! Thank you George for so eloquently conveying my thoughts. This Saturday, if I am able, I hope to participate in the HANDS OFF demonstrations in Sacramento, California's Capitol. I will also be on a call tonight with MoveOn. Why us it only good men get assassinated in this country, I hope trumpslime gags on his own regurgitation.
Thank you Fay -and grateful to you and all who participate. It is vital to demonstrate the majority embraces justice and equality in the United States, and we reject the cruelty, unconstitutionality, corruption, incompetence, and illegality of the criminal enterprise formerly known as the GOP.
Hi George: Your piece this morning is among the best description that I have read to describe reality in our country today. The bubble has burst, and the U.S. version of a dream society or of a comic book democracy has been replaced with your words: ignorance, greed, racism misogyny and violence on every corner. I lived and worked in six dictator-led countries over a period of about twenty years, so have experienced both forms of governance. I did not miss the racism, the dishonesty, and the greed found in the U.S. - or the mamouth bills to be paid monthly. When I was in Russia - there were no debit or credit cards. Now they too have faced greed. Thanks for this insightful and well worded article. Elizabeth
Thank you Elizabeth. I do try to make the perspectives I share accessible and visually compelling to support the key concepts I convey -and am always grateful when my efforts are appreciated!
We cannot let this madman be the preeminent residuum of the boomer generation. Our parents' generation got us through the second World War, defeating fascism and Nazis. Now it is up to us to do the same as they did: defeat fascism and a Nazi-like chief executive. The protests this weekend will, hopefully, be non-violent. But when they result in no change in the direction of the regime, more protests will be needed. As time goes on, and protests do not change the regime from being against the people (as it is now) to being a government for the people, we will have no recourse but to revolt. This regime must be taken down, peacefully if we can. But taken down, it must be.
If the actions of the criminal-elect continues to inflict significant economic harm, his criminal enterprise might need to replace him. JD Vance, the pretend hillbilly Heritage mascot would be easy for them to control, and he would be less inclined toward the in-your-face cruelty of the would be “King Joffrey”. Absent their appetite to risk the MAGA cult base, I’m convinced the only method of a non-violent upheaval would be through a prolonged work stoppage. People would suffer. The economic outlook would dampen. But a political party that commits to passing laws that would retroactively zero out rent/mortgage and utility payments for the primary home, erase any food/medicine/necessary related credit debt during the stoppage, and restore any employee terminated for the stoppage, etc could provide the economic support necessary to eliminate the fear related to an economic inflection point in which “We the People” regain balance against “They the billionaires”.

Thank you Stefan. It seems meaningful diplomatic relations take trust, stability, and some form
of coherence, all blatantly missing from the Trump regime. It is a heartbreaking time for anyone embracing the hope of peaceful collaboration.
Very well said! Shatteringly true.

The indelible stain will outlast our lives.
You’re older! -But yes, me too. 🤓

George, is someone out there hijacking your thread? Have you heard of QFS? Did you send me something about it?
Thanks James -I’ve reported them to substack and blocked them. The account id’s are unique -however they copied my photo and my account name.
